THE BIRTH OF THE CHURCH
THE HISTORY OF HOW IT STARTED
The Life and Legacy of General Overseer Evelyn Minott

The story of General Overseer Evelyn Minott begins in the 1960s, when she was a young wife and mother, pregnant with her second child. One Saturday morning in October, while on her knees cleaning the floor and preparing for a dance she planned to attend that evening, she experienced a divine encounter.
She heard what sounded like a choir singing—clear, harmonious, and unlike anything she had ever heard before. Confused, she stepped outside and asked a neighbor whether a funeral procession had passed by. The neighbor replied that nothing of the sort had happened. It was then, in that quiet and sacred moment, that the Lord spoke to her. Declaring that it was her last chance to serve Him,
the Lord called her that day—and she surrendered her life to Jesus Christ on her knees. That sacred moment marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of unwavering devotion to the Kingdom of God.
She was baptized at Cheswick Deliverance Centre Church during a tent crusade led by Rev. Dr. V. T. Williams at New Bridge, Plantain Garden River. While pregnant with her third child, she received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. After relocating to Lyssons and working at Princess Margaret Hospital, she began attending Mt. Stewart Church under the leadership of Elder Calbert Johnson, where she served faithfully as an ordained Evangelist.
As Evangelist Minott, she conducted cottage meetings and prayed fervently for individuals. Through these gatherings, many came to salvation—including Sis. Artwell, introduced to her by Mother Rose. Sis. Artwell later helped secure the Basic School room—affectionately called the “Matches Box”—as a meeting place. Her ministry continued to flourish under the Full Gospel Pentecostal Ministry, where she was later ordained as Pastor Minott.
Pastor Minott planted churches in Roselle, Top Moro, and Lyssons, tirelessly preaching the gospel across St. Thomas and throughout other parishes including Clarendon, Manchester, St. Catherine, and Kingston. Her ministry touched countless lives through baptisms, healing, and deliverance. People traveled from far and wide for her prayers, and many witnessed miraculous healings—including individuals who arrived in wheelchairs and left walking.
Known by many as the “Demon Driver,” Pastor Minott was fearless in spiritual warfare. She confronted and cast out demons with authority, often engaging them in dialogue before commanding them to leave. Her ministry was marked by power, compassion, and unshakeable faith.
When opposition arose regarding the church’s location, she led seven nights of prayer and fasting. During this time, Sis. Abrahams received a vision of the church on wheels heading to Lyssons, prompting Missionary Shand to begin the search for land. Mr. Powell, the owner of a parcel of land, confirmed that he had dreamt of a church on that very spot. The deal was finalized, and today the church stands firmly on that sacred ground.
Pastor Minott was a nurturer—especially to young people. She ensured everyone felt valued, even purchasing fabric and commissioning identical dresses for the girls, paid for from her own pocket. Many young people lived with her and became part of her extended family. Her warm personality and spiritual insight drew youth to her, and she often attended CYO events to support them.
After suffering a severe back injury, she was temporarily unable to walk. Yet the young people she had poured into visited her daily, praying and spending time with her. She possessed a remarkable gift for identifying and cultivating spiritual talents. Whether singing, preaching, teaching, or leading, she encouraged others to step boldly into their calling.
Her faith remained steadfast. Though doctors said she would never walk again, she prayed, believed—and was healed. Even with lingering back issues, she continued to travel and preach. She was a true prayer warrior, interceding for others with fervent fasting and prayer.
One notable moment occurred during the construction of the church building. She had a vision that the enemy intended to kill the lead builder, Pastor Morgan. She prayed for his family, excluding his father, whom she assumed had already passed. Days later, Pastor Morgan’s father died, temporarily halting construction. Yet God worked through the situation, and Pastor Morgan later returned with a team of skilled workers to complete the building.
After years of nurturing spiritual sons and daughters, she appointed leaders for Top Moro and Lyssons. Bishop Plummer later ordained her as Overseer Minott. Her vision and personal investment—both financial and spiritual—brought the church to life. She gave generously to anyone in need, regardless of church affiliation, assisting with school fees, bills, food, and more.
Overseer Minott was a beacon of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication to Jesus Christ. Her departure leaves a profound void, but her teachings and values continue to shape lives. We say farewell with heavy hearts, knowing her name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
She fought a good fight, kept the faith, and finished her course. May her soul rest in peace, and may light perpetually shine upon her.
Her legacy lives on through her children, her devoted church family, and countless friends. May the Lord grant us strength and favor to continue building upon the beautiful foundation she laid.
